Drive to Fight Against Cancer: Gumball 2017

Gumball Rally 2017

V6, V8, V12, steel and rubber on asphalt, gleaming cars screaming across the road like candied bullets shot through a machine gun rifle. A fleet of cars come together last April 2016 under the banner of Junior Chamber International (JCI) Alabang & JCI Lipa to conquer a common enemy. An enemy so insidious, that it preys on even children. Children whose call could not be ignored by JCI Alabang and JCI Lipa, children who needed help fighting for their very lives against a lethal foe… Cancer.

In the 2016 Gumball edition, a rally of cars and participants banded together to support Cancer Warriors Foundation of Batangas. From Alabang, they all drove to Summit Point Golf & Country Club Lipa to have a brunch and enjoy the program. Cars that were part of the rally: A Lamborghini and a Stingray, BMW Z4, Porsche Carrera S, Audi R8, Mercedez Benz C Class, along with the BMW E36 club and Altis Club.
The project was featured TV Patrol Southern Luzon and was televised later that week. The project was also covered by C! Magazine. The awareness for the advocacy of Cancer Warriors (i.e., curing children with cancer) was heightened among the 75 participants and the two JCI chapters, JCI Alabang and JCI Lipa.

JCI Alabang and JCI Lipa invite all car enthusiasts to this year’s Gumball 2017 on July 23, 2017, Sunday. The starting point will be in Petron SLEX and together we will drive to Summit Point Golf and Country Club, Lipa. The assessment fee is P1,000 per participant which includes brunch and a limited-edition Gumball 2017 shirt. If you want to participate, feel free to contact the project chairman, JCI Alabang Director Arfie Sta Maria at 0977-830-0977.

About JCI Alabang. JCI Alabang is affiliated with Junior Chamber International, a network of young active citizens who want to provide a platform for positive change. Learn more about JCI Alabang in jcialabang.org.

UNited4aCause in Cupang, Muntinlupa

United for a Cause part 2

Junior Chamber International (JCI) Alabang, a non-profit organization, recently concluded a medical mission at Sitio Tuklas in Cupang, Muntinlupa called “UNited4aCause” for the benefit of more than 200 people in need of medical assistance.

JCI Alabang is an organization composed of young entrepreneurs, businessmen, politicians, students, and corporate managers based in the Alabang, Muntinlupa City area with a shared vision and passion for service. In partnership City Councilor Robert Baes and his son Lester Baes, JCI Alabang is giving back to their less-fortunate neighbors in the city.

The medical mission included a feeding program, a free health check-up, and free medicines and eyeglasses. More than 200 residents availed of the services on-site, and they were warmly assisted by the three volunteer doctors and six volunteer nurses.

The medical mission was also JCI Alabang’s first project after their grand induction and turnover ceremonies last February 24, 2016. Newly-inducted members Barnie Gutierez-Alis, Vincent Yumul, and Eugene Lucas Acevedo were thrilled to have managed the day’s events.

“I am so glad that I chose to join JCI Alabang. Community service is so fulfilling because I get reminded of my humble beginnings as a child like the ones I saw today. It’s an absolutely heartwarming experience,” said Barnie Gutierez-Alis, a new member of JCI Alabang.

This event will be one of many more to come in JCI Alabang’s calendar. JCI Alabang aims to reach out to more communities in the months to come.

“Being in JCI Alabang is being about service. We are fortunate to have such gracious volunteer medical staff and of course we are ever thankful for our partnership with Councilor Robert Baes and Lester Baes. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for our chapter,” declared Eugene Lucas Acevedo, another new member.

Haven for Children Christmas Party with The Feast Alabang

Christmas Party at Haven for Children - The Feast Alabang and JCI Alabang

JCI Alabang, in partnership with The Feast Alabang Outreach Ministry, held an early Christmas celebration with the Haven for Children Kids last November 30, 2015.

Haven for Children is a center for street children recovering from substance abuse. Having a Christmas party for the kids meant a break from their usual routine. They actively participated in the parlor games, and even showcased their dancing talents in a group dance off. A small salo-salo was held afterwards.

The Feast Outreach Ministry also held a short Catechism session with the kids, as well as a group sharing of their Christmas wishes/prayers.

JCI Alabang would like to thank The Feast Alabang Outreach Ministry for hosting the event. Big thanks also to 2016 Director for Community Deelopment Ton Baes for organizing the Christmas party, and to those who were part of the event: 2016 President RJ Paguyo, 2015 President Aimee Flordeliza, 2014 President Vicky Martinez, 2016 Public Relations and Social Media Commissioner Jen Fidel, 2015 SG KC Ang, and Bryan Mata.

To anyone interested, Haven for Children is selling their own Christmas decorations and handicrafts. Christmas lanterns (parol) are being sold for P50.00 only. You may purchase them at the Haven for Children Center, right across Alabang Town Center (along Alabang Zapote).

A Successful JCI Got Heart: Be a Hero on Heroes Day

Got Heart: Be a Hero on Heroes Day

Muntinlupa, Philippines — The thirty-three chapters of JCI Metro Area banded together in Barangay Sucat to implement one of the biggest medical/dental/surgical missions and children’s activities in JCI Metro Manila– 2,000 individuals in half a day. More than 50 doctors, 12 dentists, and dozens of healthcare workers were tapped from St. Luke’s QC, PGH, Asian Hospital, Muntinlupa Health Office, Barangay Sucat Health Office, and Magallanes Skin and Wellness Clinic. Specializations in the following fields were present: surgery, rheumatology, pulmonology, cardiology, dermatology, ophthalmology, family medicine and many more.

As the JCI value states, “Service to humanity is the best work of life.”

JCI Alabang President Aimee Flordeliza shared, “the Got Heart event was an example how JCI can bring great impact to the world. Imagine how much better our society will be if more people choose to become heroes in their daily lives. Banding the 30+ chapter of JCI Metro Area for this project was not possible without the leadership of Metro South RVP Chai Talag and the support of AVP Steve, RVP Nazh, RVP Jan, RVP Lynn, all the Batch Legacy Presidents, Batch Tides, and JCI friends.”

A JCI pharmacy was setup to dispense free medicine and vitamins to the participants. Donated medicine and vitamins from Ritemed, The Generics Pharmacy, and Unilab were dispensed through the efforts of JCI Makati Princess Urduja, JCI Valenzuela, JCI Fort Bonifacio Taguig City, and JCI Alabang. The Metro Area group also bought medicines to ensure that the served patients follow the correct course of treatment for their maladies. The whole JCI Metro Area manned this challenging section.

The Unilab mobile lab and X-ray bus was present to give results. There were 77 chest x-rays, 34 urinalysis, and 30 ECG test results. We are thankful to JCI Manila for tapping this.

Free reading glasses were given by Muntinlupa Councilor Robert Baes and JCI Mandaluyong.

A team of surgeons led by Dr. Lester Suntay did the Surgical Mission: Operation Bukol. They performed minor surgeries to a lot of patients. Dr. Lester Suntay heeded the call of JCI Alabang as a former member, now kagawad in Barangay Ayala Alabang.

While waiting, various talks on health by Operation Gray (Diabetes Screening), Cleft Lip/ Palate Screening, jobs by TESDA, breastfeeding session were done.

The Philippine Association of Private School Dentists and the Hapee mobile dental clinic was there to cater to 300 children in need of tooth extraction. For the children, the kids had Books N’ Roses. Paper rose-making and storytelling as part of Books N’ Roses was done, celebrating the Feast of St George.

The JCI Marikina Marikit and JCI Manilenas lead a dance group to keep the crowd entertained. This was important for crowd control.

Since Barangay Sucat is on top of a fault line, the MMDA Disaster Preparedness unit was present to share how to prepare for disasters. They brought the earthquake simulator to let the residents see how strong a 7-magnitude earthquake can go.

Lead by JCI Alabang, JCI Paranaque Asinderas and JCI Paranaque Pambato, the 90-strong JCI volunteers gathered support and made the JCI Got Heart: Be a Hero a memorable one. The doctors were tapped by JCI Makati Princess Urduja, JCI Alabang, and JCI Makati. JCI Paranaque Pambato provided logistical support. The Dentists were tapped by JCI Paranaque Asinderas. Chapters that participated in Books N’ Roses were JCI QC Diamante, JCI San Juan Dambana, JCI Pateros Balut, JCI San Juan Pinaglabanan, JCI Fort Bonifacio Taguig City, JCI Alabang, and JCI Manilena. The health talks were tapped by the JCI Rizal Region, and JCI Perlas Pasay. JCI Marilao Marilag, JCI Manila, JCI FBTC and the host chapters provided the much needed manpower support.

Congratulations to the core team led by Chairman Lester Baes and Dr Emy and co-host presidents, Pres Aimee, Pres Jeamie and Pres Ian! Congratulations to the BOD and members of JCI Alabang, JCI Paranaque Asinderas, and JCI Paranaque Pambato for all the hard work in the past few days!

Thanks again to all the Got Heart Superheroes for your cooperation, initiative and, most of all, heroism. We are proud to be part of Metro Area and to be working with all of you.

Kwansei Gakuin University Visits Haven for Children

Kwansei Gakuin Visit

A group of Kwansei Gakuin University students visited Haven for Children, Muntinlupa last last Aug. 27, 2015. Prof Masakazu Sakaguchi led the eight students to have a cultural exchange session with the kids in Haven.

The development studies students taught the kids to do a Japanese dance and made japanese-style fans. There was also a rock-paper-scissors playoff. Simple snacks were shared with the kids after an afternoon of activities.

The group also gave some gifts to Haven for Children, including a monetary gift that Haven for Children will use for the upcoming Family Day.

Professor Sakaguchi and the Kwansei Gakuin students were in the Philippines for a trek with ADB. The students chose to visit Haven for Children for a cultural exchange and JCI Alabang helped coordinate to make this happen.

Professor Sakaguchi said, “We are very happy with the visit to Haven for Children. I plan to return here next year with a different set of students. Thank you JCI Alabang for making this possible.”

JCI Alabang President Aimee Flordeliza said, “Cultural exchange with Japan is usually limited to those privileged who can afford to travel to Japan. Thank you to Sakaguchi-san and the Kwansei Gakuin students for taking the time to visit Haven for Children.”

Congratulations to the JCI Alabang project chairman Andre Oblepias and project member Francis Villanueva for a job well done!
